Letter from a Soldier in Iraq on the Iraq War Funding Bill

Memorandum for Record: Military Spending Concerns

FROM: SPC Freeman, Milo; US Army, Iraq

TO: Senate Democrats, Republicans, and "American Idol" viewers across the nation.

1. You. Punk. Ass. Pantywaisted. Bitches.

2. You had a chance. You could have put your money where your mouth is--could have put some ass behind all those claims of "favoring an end to war."

3. And you fucking choked.

4. Let me explain something to you. Your children; your spouses; your lovers and friends and parents and CONSTITUENTS are hostages to this war. They're dying for a conflict with no concrete objective. They're losing marriages and childhood moments to a never-ending cycle of extended tours. Their equipment, their morale, is stretched thin. And some of them--those of us smart enough not to buy the fucking hype--were counting on you to find your fucking testicles and put an end to this shit. We were counting…

"Now...This" from Thus Spoke the Spectacle

This is a great multimedia piece put together by Eric Goodman, a buddy of mine. I've seen it live in NYC and on film. Very important stuff -- excellent musical and intellectual meditation on the corrosive role of the media in our society. Inspired by many people: Chomsky, Neil Postman, Nietzsche, Pink Floyd and other progressive rock groups, documentarians like Godfrey Reggio (of Koyaanisqatsifame), and many more...

Machu Picchu

Beautiful, no? The Incas built this, plus thousands of miles of roads, aqueducts, cities, and pyramids, without the wheel. They rival the Romans among pre-modern civilizations. Amazing.

Greg Palast Eviscerates A Critic of his Vote-Caging Research

A deservedly vicious take-down of a moronic "counterargument" by a "diarist" on dKos reminiscent of Twain's demolition of James Fenimore Cooper. Fact and sarcasm make a caustic combination. Use against bullshit twice daily; apply liberally.

Palast's docs force Griffin to resign. Wonder what the brainiacs at dKos will have to say now?Caging hits the mainstream, kind of (Slate).

NYC Production of The Taming of the Shrew

Dear Friends,
The Hipgnosis Theatre Company returns with a fresh look at The Taming of the Shrew, following up successful productions of Measure for Measure and The Winter's Tale with one of Shakespeare's most controversial but also funniest plays!
As a ramshackle, vaudeville-inspired Taming unfolds-- complete with actor-produced music and sound effects, colorful backdrops and unforgiving footlights-- the story of Kate and Petruchio, the hidden play inside the slapstick, comes into full focus. Hipgnosis' The Taming of the Shrew is a meditation on love, the theatrics it demands from us and creates in us, and what it means to be truly rich.

When: June 15 - July 1; Wednesdays - Saturdays, 8pm; Sundays, 5pm; additional Saturday matinee (2pm) on June 30.
Where: Flamboyan Theatre, at the Clemente Soto Velez (CSV) Cultural Center, 107 Suffolk St, between Rivington and Delancey Streets. Directions: Take the F to Delancey St or the J/M/Z to Essex; walk East on Delancey (towards the W…

Chomsky: "Poisoned Chalice: The Media and the Use of Force"

Keynote address by Chomsky on May 17th at the "20 Years of Propaganda?" Conference, University of Windsor, Canada, discussing Chomsky and Herman's Manufacturing Consent.

Marvin Kalb's paper (PDF) on the anti-Israel bias (sic) in the media during the Lebanon war last year, "The Israeli-Hezbollah War of 2006: The Media as a Weapon in Asymmetrical Conflict," mentioned toward the end by Chomsky.

Al Gore Interviewed by Charlie Rose on The Assault on Reason

May 25, 2007.

Textbook case of how the media avoids the main issue, brought to you by Head Moron, Charlie Rose. Watch how Gore calls him on it, too.

In general agreement with Gore, with the major exceptions of defending the Democrats' craven performance on the Iraq funding bill and thinking that the US is the "natural leader of the world." There are some minor exceptions, too, but in general, the "new" Gore is doing good for the country. Let's see whether anyone listens.

Sheehan on Leaving the Democrats and Leaving the Peace Movement

Expect the usual attacks from the usual assholes. Monitor Media Matters for new attacks -- there are plenty of old ones from the likes of Glenn Beck ("a pretty big prostitute," for example -- textbook projection). As with Bacevich, the least we can do is pound on any media outlet that allows attacks.

This is our failure, by the way, not hers.

Of course.
On Leaving the Democrats.On Leaving the Peace Movement.Send her a well-deserved thank-you.

Update: Democracy Now! coverage and interview.

I lost my son to a conflict I oppose. We were both doing our duty

Hello, friends:

A dose of truth for this Memorial Day, if you haven't already seen this. I wonder whether Bacevich has been attacked on Fox/AM radio yet? Only a matter of time. The least we can all do is pound on any media outlet that allows what I fear will be the usual Ann-Coulter-like attack. Keep an eye on Media Matters.

People, pass it on. Do not depend on the Democrats -- or the Republicans -- to make any sufficient changes without extreme pressure. How many more deaths and injuries, how much more destruction and horror must all human beings caught in this mindless, rapacious war suffer until we, the people, rise up? Much -- perhaps the survival of the country and even the species -- depends on the answer.

Best, Doug

PS: Some of Bacevich's excellent talks linked below.

Secret memo shows Israel knew Six Day War was illegal

From The Independent. Hmmm...wonder what SMERSHowitz will have to say about this?

Bad article title -- it's really about this:
A senior legal official who secretly warned the government of Israel after the Six Day War of 1967 that it would be illegal to build Jewish settlementsin the occupied Palestinian territories has said, for the first time, that he still believes that he was right.More from the Independent here.
