'We Are Moving Rapidly Towards an Abyss' Mohamed El Baradei

Key points:
[I]n order to seem credible to the nuclear wannabe states we must demand steps toward nuclear disarmament from those who have nuclear weapons -- an obligation that is stipulated in the nonproliferation treaty but is not complied with. I deplore this two-faced approach. If practically all nuclear powers are modernizing instead of reducing their arsenals, how can we argue with the non-nuclear states?
We pay completely inadequate attention to the important threats, the inhuman living conditions of billions of people, climate change and the potential for nuclear holocaust. We stand at a crossroads, and we are moving rapidly toward an abyss. There are currently 27,000 nuclear warheads in the world. If we don't change our way of thinking, John F. Kennedy's prediction that there would be 20 nuclear powers will soon come true. And with each new player and each new weapon, the risk of a planned or accidental nuclear war increases.

The Real News: On Iran

A little informed and sane comment...

Joint statement of Norman Finkelstein and DePaul University on their tenure controversy and its resolution

Click the title of this post to read; watch below, along with some video of the protest and another angle on the events of yesterday:

And here's Finkelstein's encomium to the late Raul Hilberg, author of The Destruction of the European Jews.Hilberg was a dogged supporter of Finkelstein's; a conservative, traditional historian with the intellectual honesty to call it as he saw it. Not the only one, by the way -- Sara Roy, Noam Chomsky, Avi Shlaim, Edward Said, Christopher Hitchens (pre-Kool Aid), Ian Kershaw, and on and on and on... Check the blurbs on all his books.

That, plus his outstanding teaching -- nah, not for DePaul. Clearly didn't deserve tenure. As Chomsky has said, this was a complete travesty, but it was loud and public. Along with the Carter book, Walt & Mearsheimer, Tony Judt, and a variety of other critical voices (who don't necessarily agree with each other, of course), the propaganda edifice is cracking.

A side effect of this crumbling ideology t…

AI, HRW, and B'tselem on Israel-Palestine

Searches for all sites. Feel free to peruse and to do your own searches:
AIHRW (I have to point out HRW's just-released report on the Lebanon war last year: Israel/Lebanon: Israeli Indiscriminate Attacks Killed Most Civilians, No Evidence of Widespread Hezbollah ‘Shielding’)B'tselem -- This is just a map of all parts of the site: all they do is Israel and the OTs. Let's throw in a couple more:
Physicians for Human Rights: IsraelDoctors without BordersUN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights: OTsUN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights: Israel
It's quite interesting; see Finkelstein's Beyond Chutzpah: The Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History for a summary of much of this information (AI, HRW, and B'tselem, mainly).

Of course, all of these organizations are deeply antisemitic -- except when they condemn enemies of Israel, of course.

Democracy Now on the Second Anniversary of Katrina

Shooting the messengers, By Mariano Aguirre

Here's the original Le Monde Diplomatique version -- not timing out anymore.

I've recently endured (another) bout of "you're a self-hating, anti-Semitic..." yadda yadda. So, as if anyone was unsure of this obvious taboo, I can vouch for it first-hand, as well as second-hand.

Here's some info on Aguirre.

And here's a report from IPS on the Brussels conference: Call to Halt EU Trade with Israel, By David Cronin. Gee, lots of self-haters coming out of the woodwork! Here's the site for European Jews for a Just Peace. Here's the EUMC 2005 definition of antisemitism (PDF). Note the second group of bullets.

Iran: Consequences of a War, Professor Paul Rogers, February 2006

Another scholarly paper on the Iran issue. Here's more of Paul Rogers' writing. Sarkozy's on board with military strikes. Lovely.

More on the build-up to war here; from DN! --
Drumbeat For Attack on Iran Grows Louder in Washington
Talk about a U.S. attack on Iran appears to be growing louder in Washington. There are reports that Vice President Dick Cheney's office has issued instructions to conservative think tanks to start a drumbeat for attacking Iran. On Monday the American Enterprise Institute is hosting two events related to Iran. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is giving a speech on how the war on terrorism should be viewed as a [sic] "a world war that pits civilization against terrorists and their state sponsors who wish to impose a new dark age." Later in the day former CIA director Jim Woolsey and others will meet to discuss a new book by longtime Iran hawk Michael Leeden titled "The Iranian Time Bomb: The Mullah Zealots' Quest for Destructi…

A Whole Load of Finkelstein Videos

Enjoy. A world-class scholar, no matter what the DePaul administration says! Here's a little from Raul Hilberg, RIP.

1. On The Holocaust Industry

2. Is Criticism of Israel Anti-Semitic?

3. Audio of full debate with Shlomo Ben-Ami.

4. The Final Insult, on the Holocaust double-shakedown.

5. The Battle for the Holocaust -- Channel 4 Documentary

Note: When the World Jewish Congress dude claims that in The Holocaust Industry, Finkelstein cites "a German newspaper" on the $9bn the WJC amassed from Holocaust compensation monies, well, here's the actual text:
Edgar Bronfman movingly testified before the House Banking Committee that the Swiss should not "be allowed to make a profit from the ashes of the Holocaust." On the other hand, Bronfman recently acknowledged that the WJC treasury has amassed no less than "roughly $7 billion" in compensation monies.
